Join founder and CEO of African Diasporic Arts and Education Inc. and UCF Professor of Africana Studies, Don Harrell, who will talk about the relationship between music and society. This talk will explore how both sacred and secular music has served as a source of joy and a means of soothing pain to counter the effects of legal and social oppression and exploitation of Black Americans. Joy and Pain explores this dynamic with focus on rap and hip-hop culture, its proliferation, and its functional use in world-wide social justice movements.
