Lunch & Learn - Lue Gim Gong: A Chinese American Pioneer and the Citrus Wizard of Florida
Friday, May 1, 2026, noon

Lue Gim Gong (刘锦浓, August 24, 1857 – June 3, 1925), a Chinese American immigrant of the late nineteenth century, was an accomplished horticulturist whose work contributed to the growth of the citrus industry in Florida. Lue is best known for developing a cold-resistant orange variety along with several other valuable plants. Although Lue earned such titles as the “Wizard of Citrus Growers” and the “Chinese Burbank of Florida,” his fame did not bring him fortune. Seventy-five years after his death, the Florida Department of State honored him as a “Great Floridian.” Despite facing hardship, ignorance, and injustice, Lue Gim Gong lived a remarkable life in the Florida frontier, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations in our multicultural society of the twenty-first century.
